I am happy to share with you the new website of Saarc Academy of Ophthalmology. Saarc Academy of ophthalmology is a Conglomeration of ophthalmologist from eight countries in south Asian region comprising of India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Maldives & Afghanistan. We share common history, background, culture and Economic development and ophthalmology is no exception.
One of the main objective of the society is speciality development in SAARC region. We have also had fellowship training program for our young Ophthalmologist with ICO and we are going to restart the same. Community outreach program is not only important as our regional necessity and but a definite indicator and credible marker for prevention of blindness in this region.
Our ophthalmologist rank very high and their skill enjoy universal ascendancy. Some of our friends from ophthalmic industry have reached a new height in manufacturing high quality machines and equipment’s have got FDA approval. At global level SAO has been recognised as a supranational body by International Council of Ophthalmology- ICO. Our members are regularly contributing to various international ophthalmic bodies like SOE, AAO, APAO, MEACO, COS and many such International and national ophthalmic organisations.
The society has been active for last 3 decades however was dormant for few years in the middle. I remember in early 90's congress being held in Kathmandu followed by India. After a few years of dormancy it became active again when Prof Saliya Pathirana my friend reconvened the 8th Saarc congress on my insistence in Colombo, Sri Lanka, 2006 for which I remain grateful for his landmark contribution in revival. Following this we organised next 9th conference in New Delhi (22-24 August, 2008) which was largely attended and generated good revenue for the association. Next 10th conference was held in Dhaka in Bangladesh (5-8th March 2011) where I got support from Prof Ava Hossain & Prof Modassir Ali. The meeting highlights included presence of President of Bangladesh who inaugurated this meeting besides rich Scientific Programme & Cultural events.
Sri Lanka (28th September to 1st October 2014) was again the host for our next 12th Biennial SAO conference and it was largely successful with support from Sri Lanka college of Ophthalmology.
Karachi Pakistan (18-21st August, 2016) was the venue of our next 13th Biennial SAO conference and I can safely vouch that it turned out to be the one of the best hospitality and Academic event.
I am thankful to Nepal Ophthalmic Society (NOS), Prof Suman Thapa, Dr. Sabina Shrestha and Dr. Eli Pradhan who made the 14th Saarc conference a great success last year (21-24th June 2018) with wonderful hospitality and scientific presentation.
The SAARC region is set for a sea change in ophthalmic care and our SAO is making all efforts to uplift the academia and training besides acting as a catalyst for our ophthalmic manufacturing friends and ultimately providing high quality Eyecare in the region.
I welcome all the Member nation to contribute and actively work to make SAO very visible in global ophthalmology.
With best wishes & looking forward to support from all our member nation,
Prof. (Dr.) Rajvardhan Azad
Secretary General SAO
