Message from the President, SAARC Academy of Ophthalmology

Prof. O. K. Malla
SAARC Academy of Ophthalmology (SAO)

I am delighted to know that SAO is coming out with a new website. It is my pleasure and privilege to offer a message as the president of SAO.

One of the major objectives of SAARC countries is to combat blindness and also develop sub-specialties in the region and at the same time share our knowledge, expertise and technology.

Today our organizations share similar goals: a dedication to advancing education and research as a means to prevent blindness and concern for delivering eye care to those who need it most.

Vision 2020 "The Right to Sight" has been a tremendous success in eliminating common blinding diseases. The major causes of avoidable blindness like cataract, low vision/refractive error, trachoma and xerophthalmia have largely been taken care of over the past. The immediate challenging problems of the eye would be the diseases of the retina, mainly, diabetic retinopathy, AMD, ROP, and glaucoma.

In view of DR emerging as a big challenge and public health issue, we need to formulate proper guidelines for SAARC countries to actively detect and manage the issue of DR.

SAO inclusion in the ICO council should help develop the sub-specialty training in the region and thereby bring uniformity in it. Also, SAO need to coordinate with the member countries of the region in this respect and come out with a workable program.

I wish SAO to achieve greater heights in its endeavor.

With compliments and warm regards,

Prof. Dr. O.K. Malla
